Introduction:

The Sangay National Park is the largest natural reserve in Ecuador with a size of 549,000 hectares. It extends from the Páramo landscape of the highlands to the cloud forest in the east, running through a huge variety of ecosystems. This wild area is the home of the Jaguar, Puma and Condor. During the seven days of this extraordinary trekking we will attempt to climb the Sangay volcano and complete one of the most adventurous trips in Ecuador.

Itinerary:

Day 1:                        Quito – Riobamba – Alao

We’ll head south on the Panamerica Highway, passing the picturesque valleys of the highlands. In the village of Alao, we will meet up with our porters and set up our camp.

Day 2:                        Alao – Culebrillas

Accompanied by our porters, we will start a long hike to Culebrillas where we will camp at a height of 3600 meters. Weather permitting,  we will have a view of

Sangay and at night witness one of the plenty eruptions of the volcano.

Day 3:                        Culebrillas-Yanayacu

We will pass the steep slopes and the typical forest of the region until we arrive at Yanayacu. Later, we will set up our camp next to a river.

Day 4:                        Yanayacu-La Playa

Walking along the rims with the typical vegetation of this zone, we will reach La Playa at the foot of the volcano, where we will set up our camp.

Day 5:                        La Playa-Summit

Providing favorable conditions, at the break of dawn we will begin out attempt to reach the summit of the volcano (5230  m).  After many photo opportunities, we will return to base camp.

Day 6:                        La Playa-Yanayacu

We will start our hike back. At Yanayacu, we will set up our camp again.

Day 7:                        Yanayacu-Alao-Quito

We will hike the last part of our trip to Alao and leave the National Park of Sangay and journey back to Quito.
